Beginning Drawing and Painting in two units

Fall workshop in two units: unit 1 is drawing with pencil and charcoal.  Anita will teach  the skills you will need to create realistic drawings and portraits without using projectors, grids or tools.   Unit two  will  be beginning oil painting where you will use the skills you gained from the drawing classes to apply them to color and learning to manipulate oil paints.  Several different styles of applying paint will be shown so that you can learn to paint the right way and your way from the start. In Unit 2 we will use the skills learned from the drawing classes (Unit 1) and we will explore the nuances of color in our work with oil paints.  This unit is 6 weeks as well, and after completing both units, you  can choose to continue art lessons in my home studio with your own individual projects.
Registration form for Unit 2:  NOTE: UNIT 2 WILL COMMENCE ONE WEEK LATER ON OCTOBER 28TH OR 30TH

Beginning Watercolor Class

Flyer and registration information
Come learn how easy it is to create beautiful watercolor paintings in this intensive 6 week beginning watercolor class.   Ideal for first time painters, this class will give you the skills and confidence to begin your artistic journey!

Pink Clematis Watercolor

This dramatic flower caught the sunlight and was such a delight to paint.  Watercolor is the perfect medium for  the translucent effect on the petals and the blurry background vegetation.  I will be teaching a beginning watercolor class this fall at The Stampin Post in Old Town Temecula.  Check the workshop flyer above for more information!

Classical Still Life

This is a classical still life that I did in a David Gray workshop. The idea is for peaceful minimalism rendered from life over a period of five days in a very controlled and multi layered approach.  It was incredibly slow and labor intensive, as befitting a more meditative and zen style of atelier painting techniques. For example, the white sea shell alone took about 7 hours to finish.   I learned so much from David.  He was a generous and thoughtful teacher.
When I finished the painting, I wrote down about four pages of things that I learned doing this.  Everything from oil technique to mustering patience in working towards a precise result.
While this is a realistic painting, it is not meant to be photo-realistic.  The decisions of which edges to  soften and harden, which edges to lose completely, which colors to emphasize, which details to omit and which values to exploit, the composition to direct the eye and control focal point were just some of the decisions that artists must make when confronted with painting from life. Pretty complex!
I will definitely continue to create a few classical still lifes along with my more ala prima approach.

The Ginormous Move is Done

I will be finally getting back to creating art soon!  Moving from the far northeast corner of Washington State to beautiful Southern California has taken about five months out of my creating time, but my studio is all unpacked and I am ready to get the brushes wet and make some drawing dust!  Stay tuned!
